Antique Millville umbrella paperweight
Clarence Newel writes in his seminal book Old Glass Paperweights of Southern New Jersey Umbrella-type designs appeared very early, some probably as early as the 1860s. This is a clean well-centered motif with pink and yellow over an opal umbrella. This is a nice large footed weight, identified so closely with the glassmaking area of southern New Jersey. 3 3/16 diameter, 3 1/8 high. Excellent condition, with average wear on basal rim, and a typical pontil scar. This paperweight is from the Mrs. Ella Grace Brown Burdick Collection at the Chicago Art Institute. Burdick collected a number of things, most notably glass paperweights, which were given to the Art Institute in 1961. The museum recently deaccessioned a number of weights, most duplicates to other weights in their collection, which is the most valuable and one of the best collections in the world.
