A magnificent piece of Jugendstil Secession design from the c1900 period, which is stamped as German 800 silver. This amazing piece of design, a rather spectacular umbrella handle, is a large piece of art and is the only one like it I have been able to find in all my research. Undoubtedly Secessionist in design- it is attributed to Josef Maria Olbrich, as it shares so much similarity to other pieces of his signed work. I had contemplated mounting and framing this large piece, as it is such a wonderful thing. However, having found very similar pieces by Olbrich-I feel there is a sound basis for an attribution to Olbrich.
Along with Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffman, Olbrich founded the Secession artistic group. Olbrich, in fact, designed the famous Secession building in Vienna - if you have not seen images of it before, please take a look.

The hand wrought nature of the work is excellent; the spirals and symmetrical lines come together beautifully in this wonderful Art Nouveau design. The attention to detail of even the smallest part, for example, the three arrows pointing to the right with three arrows underneath, pointing this time to the left.... It is stamped with a partly rubbed German crescent moon and crown, "800" and then the mark for Carl Forster & Graf from Schwabisch Gmund. They were a highly regarded silver works company, who were founded c1850 and who made silver pieces for some of the best names in retail in Germany in that era, for example Wilhelm Muller (Berlin, Pforzheim, Schwabisch Gmund).

Carl Forster & Graf were the manufacturers of the piece but there is no designer's mark. Olbrich moved to Darmstadt at the height of his very short design career he died young! Darmstadt is approx only 90 miles from Schwabisch Gmund so there is little doubt that Olbrich would have collaborated / designed pieces for the company of Carl Forster & Graf. The design is identical on both sides, measures approx 20cm in length and approx 6cm at its widest point. It will be sent with International tracked and signed.
